‘Pay your fair share’: Ex-Navy submarine officer torches DOGE attacks on vets’ benefits

The Trump Administration and the Division of Authorities Effectivity (DOGE), headed by SpaceX/Tesla/X.com chief Elon Musk, are focusing on a variety of federal authorities companies for mass layoffs — from the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) to the U.S. Division of Well being and Human Providers (HHS) to the U.S. Social Safety Administration (SSA). The U.S. Company for Worldwide Growth (USAID) is being gutted, and Trump is proposing eliminating the U.S. Division of Schooling altogether.

In a biting op-ed printed by The Hill on March 13, former U.S. Navy submarine officer Alec Emmert argues that Trump/DOGE cuts are hurting veterans in a giant approach.

“The veteran group must put partisanship apart, come collectively and look out for our personal greatest pursuits,” writes Emmert, who serves as CEO of the nonprofit Service to Faculty. “Whereas billionaires are eliminating our jobs and contemplating slicing our advantages, we should make our voices heard. The demand to DOGE’s leaders needs to be easy: Do not take into consideration touching our advantages till you pay your fair proportion of taxes.”

Emmert warns that the Trump Administration/DOGE cuts might hurt the U.S. Armed Forces by making navy service appear unattractive financially.

“Few veterans come from rich backgrounds; America’s prosperous households don’t prefer to ship their kids to conflict,” Emmert observes. “Nonetheless, navy service gives veterans alternatives for social mobility by way of its training advantages…. Whereas veterans have usually loved public assist and safety, current DOGE cuts have had a disproportionately destructive affect on the group.”

Emmert continues, “The indiscriminate firing of federal employees with out regard for his or her veteran standing is deeply troubling, as almost one-third of federal employees served.
