India, US Hold ‘Constructive’ Talks; Push For Early Conclusion Of Trade Deal

Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, together with a high-level delegation, visited the US from Sept. 22 to 24 to advance discussions on bilateral commerce and funding. Either side held “constructive exchanges” on the potential contours of the commerce deal, the Commerce Ministry mentioned in an official launch on Friday.

Either side agreed to proceed engagements with the target of reaching an early conclusion of a mutually helpful settlement, it added.

Throughout the go to, Goyal met Ambassador Jamieson Greer, United States Commerce Consultant, and Sergio Gor, US Ambassador-designate to India.

Alongside official talks, the delegation engaged with main US-based companies and traders. The discussions focussed on selling commerce and funding alternatives throughout key sectors. The conferences drew a constructive response, with enterprise leaders reiterating their confidence in India’s development story and expressing curiosity in increasing their operations within the nation, the ministry added.

The resumption of India-US commerce talks comes after a interval of transient disruption, triggered by the imposition of fifty% tariffs on New Delhi. This features a 25% punitive levy for the acquisition of Russian crude oil.

An American delegation, led by Brendan Lynch, the US chief negotiator and Assistant US Commerce Consultant for South and Central Asia, arrived in New Delhi earlier in September. Following the assembly, an announcement was issued which recommended that India and the US have agreed to step up efforts to conclude a mutually helpful commerce settlement on the earliest.

On Thursday, NDTV Revenue learnt from sources that India’s Russian oil imports emerged as probably the most urgent concern within the commerce negotiations held with the US this week.

The talks have been productive and “progressing effectively to this point”, the individuals mentioned, whereas including that commerce and visa-related points are unlikely to be combined, as US officers are eager to deal with them as two separate topics of debate.
