CBDT flags bogus claims on political and charitable donations

New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes Saturday stated it has discovered widespread misuse of tax deductions linked to political donations and charitable contributions and has launched a focused marketing campaign beginning December 12 urging taxpayers to evaluation and proper their revenue tax returns and withdraw fraudulent claims.

It stated many taxpayers had claimed deductions for donations to Registered Unrecognised Political Events (RUPPs) that have been later discovered to be non-operational, non-filers or not engaged in any political exercise.

In its investigation, the Revenue Tax Division discovered many intermediaries concerned in submitting returns with false claims of deductions and exemptions below the Revenue Tax Act, typically on a fee foundation.
