Ratan Tata timeline: Major moments in the life of the business leader

Ratan Tata, chairman emeritus of Tata Sons, certainly one of India’s largest conglomerates, has handed away on the age of 86.

“It’s with a profound sense of loss that we bid farewell to Mr Ratan Naval Tata, a very outstanding chief whose immense contributions have formed not solely the Tata Group but in addition the very cloth of our nation,” stated N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons, in a late-night assertion.


This is a timeline highlighting key moments in his private life, and profession:

December 28, 1937: Born in Mumbai (then Bombay) to Naval and Sooni Tata. Naval Tata had been adopted by Ratanji Tata, the son of Jamsetji Tata, founding father of the Tata Group

1955: Completes education from the Cathedral and John Connon Faculty in Mumbai, adopted by Bishop Cotton Faculty in Shimla


1962: Graduates with a level in structure from Cornell College, Ithaca, New York


1962: Joins the Tata group as an assistant in Tata Industries; spends six months coaching on the Jamshedpur plant of Tata Engineering and Locomotive Firm, or Telco (now known as Tata Motors)


1963: Joins Tata Iron and Metal Firm, or Tisco (now known as Tata Metal) at its Jamshedpur facility


1969: Works as Tata Group’s resident consultant in Australia


1970: Returns to India to briefly be part of Tata Consultancy Companies (TCS), which had been launched as Tata Laptop Techniques in 1968


1971: Is known as director-in-charge of the struggling Nationwide Radio and Electronics (Nelco)


1974: Joins the board of Tata Sons as a director


1975: Completes the Superior Administration Program at Harvard Enterprise Faculty


1981: Is appointed chairman of Tata Industries. Two years later, drafts the Tata strategic plan; transforms the corporate right into a strategic assume tank and promoter of high-technology ventures


1986-1989: Serves as chairman of nationwide service Air India


March 25, 1991: Takes over from JRD Tata as chairman of Tata Sons and Tata Trusts


2000: Enters the brand new millennium by buying British model Tetley


2000: Receives the Padma Bhushan, India’s-third highest civilian honour


2004: TCS will get listed


2005: Tata Chemical compounds acquires British firm Brunner Mond


2007: Acquires European metal large Corus


2008: Acquires Jaguar Land Rover


2008: Launches the Tata Nano, India’s most inexpensive automobile


2008: Is awarded the Padma Vibhushan, the nation’s second-highest civilian honour


December 2012: Steps down as chairman of Tata Sons after 5 a long time with the Tata group, making means for Cyrus Mistry; is appointed Chairman Emeritus of Tata Sons


2013: Goes to Supreme Court docket on Niira Radia tape leak incident; argues that folks’s proper to privateness must be protected; says tapped conversations have been leaked to the media due to company rivalry
