ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka’s automobile registrations grew to 38,240 models in August 2025, from 35,232 models a month earlier, pushed by larger volumes of trishaws, motobikes and SUV/crossovers, an evaluation of motorized vehicle registry information reveals.
Three-wheeler registrations rose to 2,497 models in August from 454 in July, whereas two wheelers rose to 27,585 models from 26,171 models.
“Motor automotive registrations declined to 2,329 models in August, down from 2,748 models in July,” JB Securities, a Colombo-based brokerage mentioned in evaluation of car registry information.
“Pre-owned registrations fell to 1,772 models in August from 2,309 in July.”
In model new automobiles, BYDs elevated to 354 models up from 244 models the earlier month – the primary contributor being Dolphin accounting for 307 models.
SUV and crossover registration grew to three,808 models in August up from 3,299 in July. Model-new autos accounted for 1,866 models, whereas pre-owned made up 1,940 models.
“Toyota led the class with 1,238 models, together with Raize (789) and Land Cruiser variants,” JB Securities mentioned.
“BYD adopted with 1,019 models, pushed by ATTO 3 (554) and Sealion 6 (465). Land Rover recorded 38 models, together with Defender (17) and Vary Rover (18).
