Fire ravaged North Sea cargo ship towed to Aberdeen this week

A cargo ship concerned in a collision with an oil tanker within the North Sea shall be towed to the Port of Aberdeen.

The Portuguese-flagged Solong and the US-registered tanker Stena Immaculate collided off the coast of East Yorkshire on March 10.

The collision prompted vital injury to each vessels, triggering fires which have since been extinguished.

A crew member of the Solong, a Filipino nationwide, is lacking and presumed lifeless, whereas the ship’s Russian captain is charged with gross negligence manslaughter.

To get a fuller evaluation of the injury, the Solong is being towed to the Port of Aberdeen.

The Coastguard confirmed that the vessel, which was being hauled by a tug, would arrive on the Scottish port “later this week”.

Chief Coastguard Paddy O’Callaghan mentioned: “Salvage of the Solong has progressed to allow its relocation to the Port of Aberdeen for secure berthing.

“Solong shall be underneath tow by one tug and accompanied by one other tug, plus a vessel with counter air pollution measures ought to they be required.

“Tug and tow are scheduled to reach at Aberdeen later this week.”

He additionally mentioned the salvage operation onboard the Stena Immaculate was ongoing.

A spokesperson for Ernst Russ AG, the corporate that owns the Solong, mentioned it might be “totally assessed by specialist marine assessors and insurers” after it arrives in Aberdeen.

In an announcement to the BBC, they mentioned: “We’re very conscious of the efforts and help from all these performing within the response.

“We need to thank everybody who has responded urgently and gallantly to this incident.”

The hearth severely broken the ship, releasing some cargo into the water, together with plastic pellets often known as nurdles, which have since washed up onshore.

A complete of 36 crew members have been rescued from each ships. One sailor from the Solong, Filipino nationwide Mark Angelo Pernia, 38, is lacking and presumed lifeless.

The Solong’s captain, Vladimir Motin, has been charged with gross negligence manslaughter.

The 59-year-old from Primorsky, St Petersburg, Russia, is because of stand trial in January 2026.
