ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka shares are persevering with an upward pattern, unaffected by US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff announcement anticipated on Wednesday, brokers mentioned.

“Trump is proposing a second reciprocal tariff that might have an effect on the market negatively,” Ranjan Ranatunga, Assistant Vice President – Analysis at First Capital advised EconomyNext.

This second tariff comes as a part of the US administration’s ‘liberation day’ plans, anticipated to be unveiled on Wednesday. Nonetheless, the Sri Lankan market seems unperturbed for now.

Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff plan is predicted to have an effect on “all nations”.

“Market is constant the optimistic sentiment,” Ranatunga mentioned. “Exercise is average.”

The broader ASPI closed up 0.46 %, or 73.06 factors, at 16,007.44; whereas the extra liquid S&P SL20 Index closed up 0.23 %, or 10.84 factors, at 4,762.62.

“Turnover was barely higher than the month-to-month common,” Ranatunga mentioned.

Turnover within the session was 2.29 billion rupees. Share quantity rose to 79,621,277.

“Market picked up within the morning. There was considerably of a volatility in the course of the day.”

“Revenue-taking was seen towards the latter a part of the day.”

High contributors to the ASPI had been Hayleys (rose 3.0 % stronger at 147.75 rupees), Ceylon Tobacco Firm (rose 1.7 % at 1,383.25 rupees), Royal Ceramics (ended 2.6 % stronger at 39.00 rupees), Chevron Lubricants Lanka (rose 2.9 % at 144.00 rupees) and Dialog Axiata (up 2.1 % at 14.50 rupees).

“Besides utilities and transportation sectors, all the opposite sectors traded positively,” Ranatunga mentioned.

Main contributors to turnover had been capital items (754 million rupees), meals, beverage and tobacco (359 million rupees) and supplies (353 million rupees) shares.

John Keells Holdings (302 million rupees), Lion Brewery Ceylon (66 million rupees) and CIC Holdings (91 million rupees) noticed excessive turnover.

Most lively volumes had been seen in John Keells Holdings at 16,436,000 (turnover 332,374,668.70 rupees), Nationwide Lanka Finance at 11,932,058 (turnover 2,390,617.40) Browns Investments at 5,373,567 (turnover 40,046,763.80 rupees) and Entry Engineering at 3,712,613 (turnover 148,642,455.40 rupees).
