Sunday, 23 February 2025 – Eskom has introduced the sudden escalation of Stage 6 load shedding from 1:30 AM, following a collection of unit failures at key energy stations.
The most recent disaster stems from a number of unit journeys at Camden Energy Station, which compounded the pressure on an already fragile grid. Previous to this, Stage 3 load shedding had been applied attributable to extra breakdowns at Majuba Energy Station and a unit failure at Medupi, collectively eradicating 3,864 MW of era capability from the system.
With deliberate upkeep already accounting for 7,506 MW, Eskom acknowledged that Stage 6 load shedding was essential to replenish emergency reserves and stabilize the grid for the week forward.
