Rural voters, together with farmers, favored Donald Trump in large numbers in 2024. After Trump narrowly received the presidential election and returned to the White Home, he aggressively promoted steep new tariffs — which, many economists warned, would hit the agricultural trade onerous. However Trump assured farmers that if his tariffs elevated the price of doing enterprise, he would have a bailout for them.

In an article printed on October 16, nonetheless, Politico reporters Myah Ward and Grace Yarrow emphasize that U.S. farmers don’t get the monetary reduction they have been hoping for.

“President Donald Trump promised a bailout for farmers reeling from the consequences of his tariffs and the excessive prices for fertilizer and different gear,” Ward and Yarrow clarify. “However the cash hasn’t come, and time is working out earlier than farmers need to make essential selections about subsequent yr’s planting season. The White Home blames Democrats and the federal government shutdown for the delay of its multi-billion-dollar bailout, however that is simply one in every of many issues the administration faces.”

The reporters add, “Even when there have been a fast finish to the shutdown, it could probably take months to get cash to the farmers who want it most, in line with trade insiders and farm-state senators.”

In keeping with Ward and Yarrow, monetary assist for farmers is “difficult by an escalating commerce conflict with China, from which the administration is loath to again down.”

Conservative Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kansas) advised Politico, “Farmers are hurting financially. They’re very troubled, there’s some expectation for assist. Emotionally, it could be nice for one thing to occur quickly. However financially, they want to have the ability to go to their bankers and say that assistance is on the way in which.”

Additionally making enterprise extra difficult for farmers, Ward and Yarrow report, is Trump’s “deportation agenda,” which has “spurred backlash from farmers reliant on undocumented labor.”

“Republican lawmakers have urged the White Home to behave rapidly to gradual the compounding issues they warn may result in a farm financial disaster much like the one within the Eighties that triggered mass bankruptcies and rural flight,” the Politico reporters observe. “Producers of crops like corn, soy and different grains skilled a serious harvest yield this fall and are struggling to seek out locations to retailer it whereas they hope for excellent news on new commerce offers that Trump promised them.”
