Aberdeen’s Rovtech Options has unveiled a brand new, remotely operated car (ROV) which it claims is a primary in digital-class subsea robotics.
The agency, which was acquired by enterprise studio Ventex in September, stated the newest mannequin of its Valor ROV has been constructed for a “new period” of subsea operations together with offshore wind.
Ventex subsequently acquired the Valor – for “versatile and light-weight commentary ROV” – platform in January from Seatronics, which it stated supplied capabilities at a “far decrease weight and price” in comparison with rivals.
The agency stated the brand new unit brings “essentially the most expertise ever loaded onto an ROV”.
Rovtech CEO John Polson, 30, stated: “We’re surrounded by, and depending on, high-bandwidth comms, software program, and related automated programs. Life is safer, extra environment friendly and extra snug due to it. However underwater, progress has barely moved for the reason that Nineties. Till now.”
The agency stated ROVs have historically struggled to deal with rising volumes of knowledge produced by the widening vary of cheaper, smaller sensors making a “bandwidth bottleneck”.
Rovtech stated its “breakthrough” platform allows high-bandwidth knowledge transmission in actual time, permitting for AI-powered analytics, distant monitoring and clever decision-making on the seabed; all on the identical time and with none workarounds.
Polson added: “ROVs haven’t developed quick sufficient. Commentary-class automobiles merely weren’t constructed for the bandwidth calls for of in the present day’s digital subsea world.
“Till now, boosting bandwidth meant making automobiles larger, heavier and costlier. However Valor breaks that sample. It’s in a category of its personal – it’s the first digital class ROV.”
He added: “We don’t know what tomorrow’s subsea calls for will appear like. However we do know this – Valor is the one ROV that’s going to maintain up.”
Previously primarily based in Cumbria, Rovtech Options deployed the primary remotely operated car (ROV) for use in a nuclear facility when it was deployed at Sellafield in 1988.
