President Trump broke from his tariff letter format to inform the president of Brazil that he plans to place a 50% tariff on “any and all Brazilian merchandise despatched into america” beginning on Aug. 1.

Trump posted the letter to social media Wednesday afternoon, his twenty second such letter this week. Nonetheless, this letter departed markedly from the others Trump has posted. The entire different letters had been comparable, telling international locations that the brand new tariffs had been supposed to rectify commerce imbalances with the U.S.

The letter to Brazil, nevertheless, was about Brazilian politics. Trump wrote that the Brazilian tariffs are wanted partly “to rectify the grave injustices of the present regime,” and particularly what Trump known as a “Witch Hunt” in opposition to former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro attends his Supreme Court trial along with others charged in an alleged coup plot to keep him in office after his 2022 election defeat, in Brasilia, Brazil, Tuesday, June 10, 2025.

Bolsonaro is at present on trial for allegations that he and allies deliberate a coup in an try to remain in energy after the far-right president misplaced in a reelection bid in opposition to the leftist Lula da Silva in 2022.

Trump has lengthy praised Bolsonaro, and he continued to take action in his letter.

Trump wrote that he “knew and handled former President Jair Bolsonaro, and revered him vastly,” and mentioned the best way the previous chief has been handled in Brazil “is a world shame.”

Wednesday’s tariff letter follows an announcement Trump made earlier this week that members of the BRICS alliance, together with Brazil, can be topic to a further 10% tariff. It was unclear whether or not that tariff fee can be utilized along with the 50% fee Trump is proposing.

World leaders pose for a group photo at the 17th annual BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro, Sunday, July 6, 2025.

Brazil hosted a summit of BRICS international locations earlier this week, together with the unique BRICS members – Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa – plus new members together with Egypt and Indonesia.

At that summit, in response to Trump’s BRICS tariff risk, da Silva fired again at Trump.

“We do not need an emperor, we’re sovereign international locations,” Lula mentioned in a speech. “It isn’t proper for a president of a rustic the scale of america to threaten the world on-line.”

The tariff letters are the results of months of watching and ready as Trump determined what to do with the worldwide tariffs he introduced on April 2. That day, he introduced tariffs on almost each nation, with charges starting from 10 to 50%.

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt holds up a tariff letter from President Trump to South Korea's President Lee Jae-myung during a press briefing at the White House on July 7.

After traders panicked and inventory markets plummeted, Trump walked again his tariffs, putting in what he known as a 90-day “pause” till July 9, throughout which all of these tariffs can be held at 10%.

Trump had mentioned he would make tariff offers with international locations by July 9, however to date, solely two have been introduced. Trump this week bumped out the deadline to Aug. 1. As a substitute of asserting further offers, he has began posting these letters.

The 50% proposed tariff on Wednesday is a large bounce from the ten% tariff Trump introduced for Brazil on April 2. It’s also seemingly not supposed to appropriate a commerce deficit — in 2024, the U.S. had a commerce surplus with Brazil.
