LanzaJet and KMG Advance Kazakhstan’s First Sustainable Aviation Fuel Project – ESG Today

Throughout New York Local weather Week, sustainable aviation gas (SAF) know-how and manufacturing firm LanzaJet and Kazakhstan’s nationwide oil and gasoline firm, KazMunayGas (KMG), introduced a key milestone within the nation’s first SAF initiative. 

The 2 firms confirmed the mission will transfer into the engineering and design (FEED) section following the completion of a joint feasibility examine.

Launched in 2020 by carbon recycling know-how firm LanzaTech, Illinois-based LanzaJet has developed “Alcohol-to-Jet” know-how enabling the creation of SAF and renewable diesel from waste-based and sustainable ethanol sources together with feedstocks corresponding to low-carbon sugarcane, vitality crops, forest residuals, agricultural wastes, and natural waste.

Jimmy Samartzis, CEO of LanzaJet, stated: 

“Kazakhstan is the kind of market that creates unbelievable potential throughout industries – agriculture, logistics, oil and gasoline and aviation. Our collaboration at LanzaJet with KMG units in movement regional management to advance decrease carbon flight and decarbonization of aviation, financial improvement for the nation, and vitality safety for the area.”

The settlement with KMG was formalized throughout New York Local weather Week, the place Samartzis addressed an viewers that included Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and KMG Chairman and CEO Askhat Khassenov. The collaboration marks LanzaJet’s first deployment of its patented Alcohol-to-Jet (ATJ) know-how within the area.

The FEED stage will concentrate on finalizing the technical and financial options required to construct the ability and laying the groundwork for building. Work is predicted to start instantly, with the mission positioned to assist Kazakhstan’s anticipated SAF demand, which is projected to succeed in 70,000 tonnes per 12 months by 2030.

Khassenov stated:

“This collaboration represents a major contribution to strengthening bilateral cooperation and can assist our low-carbon improvement targets and the deployment of cutting-edge applied sciences. Total, the mission will positively influence the event of the biofuels market, enhance the environmental efficiency of the aviation sector, and improve Kazakhstan’s transit potential.”

The announcement follows a string of investments in LanzaJet, together with by Tokyo-based banking group MUFG, airport operator Groupe ADP, Microsoft and Southwest Airways. Further traders within the firm embody All Nippon Airways, Breakthrough Power, British Airways, LanzaTech, Mitsui & Co., Shell and Suncor Power.
