Air India restores all 30 grounded legacy aircraft since takeover

Sources stated the event marked a major milestone in Air India’s transformation journey.

Tata Group-promoted Air India has introduced again into service all 30 beforehand grounded plane inherited on the time of its privatisation elevating its present fleet power to 186 plane, trade sources informed businessline.

With the return to service of Boeing 777-300ER VT-ALL, all of the long-grounded plane, 19 narrowbody and 11 widebody, have been restored and joined the fleet. 

Sources stated the event marked a major milestone in Air India’s transformation journey.

On the time of privatisation, Air India had inherited a complete of round 110 legacy plane of which as many as 30 have been long-grounded. 

Notably, the VT-ALL will now go for a complete $400 million retrofit programme from 2027.

Sources stated on the time of Air India’s return to the Tata Group in 2022, rebuilding the fleet and restoring operational functionality have been recognized as a “key precedence.”

Put up-privatisation, Air India dedicated assets to revive every of those plane as a part of its broader operational restoration programme.

When contacted, Air India’s Chief Operations Officer, Captain Basil Kwauk, acknowledged the event stating that that Boeing 777-300ER, VT-ALL, is again into service. 

“It’s the final of the 30 grounded plane and bringing this plane again into service principally delivers a promise, that we as soon as stated that we are going to carry all grounded plane again and in the present day Air India delivers,” he informed businessline.

VT-ALL had remained grounded since February 2020 because of a number of unserviceable programs, ageing parts and non-availability of key parts and spares.

In April 2025, Air India initiated restoration work to carry this plane again into operational service in assist of its long-haul community growth.

The plane entered the MRO facility in Nagpur for the nose-to-tail overhaul Might 2025, the place it underwent an intensive restoration programme.

It’s learnt that greater than 3,000 key parts have been put in through the course of, together with completion of over 4,000 upkeep duties.

These included round 80 mandated modifications, amongst them the Longeron Modification, which entails a serious structural reinforcement of the plane.

Moreover, main assemblies have been changed, together with engines, the auxiliary energy unit, inlet and fan cowls and thrust reverser cowls. Each the left-hand and right-hand engines have been changed as a part of the restoration.

In addition to, the plane underwent  complete programs rebuild protecting air-conditioning, touchdown gear, hydraulics, oxygen programs, avionics and engine programs.

Moreover, every restore and modification was carried out below regulatory oversight by the Directorate Normal of Civil Aviation (DGCA), with technical steerage from Boeing.

The airline stated that the plane has now accomplished its validation section, which included system checks below operational circumstances, detailed inspections and check flights.

In the meantime, VT-ALL has acquired the Airworthiness Evaluation Certificates, a compulsory certification confirming that the plane meets the security parameters required to begin common operations.
